Background

So if you aren’t aware gatekeeping simply means limiting access to something. However, gatekeeping isn’t always obvious as someone blatantly blocking you from partaking in a activity or purposely withholding information so you can’t follow through on the interest. Some communities have taken liberties of berating, harassing or shitting on individuals for not being knowledgeable or just trying to learn. On top of that, communities put up a giant wall afterwards to ensure you can’t ask “dumb” questions or accuse you of being too dumb to accomplish a “simple” task. One such community I’ve seen sprinkles of this on is software, especially on Stack Overflow.

What is happening right now?

As in the example above software isn’t a “welcoming culture” even with the tons of free tutorials, online courses, and communities. One of the main issues in software is when a individual struggled to get started, solve a problem or built a project they feel that others have to go through the same suffering. Thankfully gatekeeping mentality didn’t completely…
