RAG Systems Aren’t Worth Causing Global Warming

You know what I’m going to say it. I don’t care about your chatbot.

Glorified clippies are starting to infuriate me, and several others as AI exhaustion is at an all-time high. This technology is supposed to make you more productive and put more work on your plate. However, CEOs have put more on our plates to entice shareholders who may or may not have participated in activities on Epstein Island.

Look, people are asking questions.

Ah, I’ve been working on a RAG system for my current company. Yes, I use a vector database and hurl that data at ChatGPT in hopes the answer isn’t complete shit. It’s painful how much work goes into grabbing the correct data, crafting the proper prompts, and including text hints to build “okayish” answers. Look, I’m not a hater despite my thousand blogs. You get pumped and think about all the potential when answers are excellent. Then, a follow-up will slam you back down to reality.

It’s not worth the pain to use these systems if they are 20% successful in hopes that the data you provide improves it. I can take any child, and they can transform feedback into better information than any machine. Like, no shit, our brains are supercomputers. Stop pushing this narrative that we’re replacing every sector, or it will…
